"It's more interesting to have just a picture of a small detail - then you can dream all the rest around it.
Because when you see the whole thing, what is there to imagine?" -Dries Van Noten

Annabel Tollman

Fashion Stylist; Journalist. New York

British stylist Annabel Tollman is probably best known for bringing her old-Hollywood glamorous touch to the feminine style choices of some of our favorite leading ladies: Scarlett Johansson, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Shakira, Mariah Carey, and Liv Tyler. She’s worked at Wallpaper and Interview and has been found inside the pages of The New York Times, Vogue, Us Weekly, Elle, Marie Claire, InStyle, The New York Post, and Japanese Vogue. While living in New York a few years back, The Coveteur co-founder Stephanie Mark spent some time working alongside Ms. Tollman, learning the ropes of the world of celebrity and editorial styling. A great teacher and mentor, it was a full circle moment when we flipped the lens and peered inside Annabel’s West Village home. The day we shot her home and closet happened to be an insane snowstorm, but Tollman looked the epitome of chic and put together when she opened the door…as expected. She keeps her dresses in this beautiful vintage armoire and her signature styling aesthetic can be defined as “bedroom dressing”, but her black leather Céline  motorcycle jacket manages to mix it all up. She’s the new owner of a vintage Hermès Kelly Bag (swoon) and, with a show currently in the works with Bravo, we can’t wait to see more of the inside world of Tollman’s universe.

<span class='fancyPhotoDesc'>Oh more sparkles. The bag is ombré sequins and I bought it instead of a black clutch because it is significantly more fun and in my mind just as useful. I’m not really a bag person but I do love a clutch bag – I have quite a big collection and most of them have been carried on the red carpet at one time or another by my clients. They’re the floozies of my wardrobe.

The earrings on the left are 19th Century - I love the oxidized metal with the diamonds, I find new diamonds too sparkly sometimes. I prefer a beautiful hazy luster rather than a brilliant sparkle. I know that sounds ridiculous – like complaining that there are too many bubbles in champagne. My grandmother gave these to me just before she died. She loved pretty things.

The Kentshire heart I bought for myself post-breakup, the Van Cleef bracelet was a present, the junky rhinestone necklace I think was in my dressing-up-box when I was little!

<span class='fancyPhotoDesc'>Oh dear. PETA here we come. I actually only buy vintage fur – somehow it seems less awful. The silver fox is a cape from the 30's – it‘s absolutely huge on and makes me look like one of the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz and entirely terrifying. The white monkey fur jacket (which is actually goat – they just call it monkey fur - I can't imagine anything more terrible than wearing monkey) was an Alessandro dell’Acqua sample. </span><span class='fancyPhotoName'>Top to Bottom. <span class='fancyPhotoDesc'>The gold watches are all vintage – inherited from various relations. Unfortunately my mother was rather too fond of leaving them on the windowsill while she bathed and they all got rather too soggy and none actually keep proper time. Neither do I, so it works out perfectly.

The bench is probably 30's – fell in love with it online and had it shipped across the country. You may have noticed I have rather a love of shiny things.

I’d been playing with it every time I went in and then eventually sold it to myself when I realized how great it looks with an army jacket. The bear somehow came home with me after a photo shoot one day. I generally think there is something entirely suspect about grownups with stuffed-animals but gave myself a hall pass somehow.

<span class='fancyPhotoDesc'>It’s vintage coat from an auction in London. When it arrived it had an old paper ticket from the Paris Metro in the pocket. I think it’s 1940's and I’m not sure what kind of cat it is but it’s very illegal to make coats out of it nowadays. And very terrible to do so regardless. I console myself with the fact that the cat would be a Septuagenarian and I’m not sure that they actually live that long.

The bag is vintage too…I love a red accessory – lips, shoes, nails, bag, but don’t like it as a color generally. Can’t quantify why but that’s just how it is.

The hat is vintage…it actually came down the catwalk in Badgley Mischka’s runway show for fall 2011. The shoes are Louboutin and I’m insane about them. The clutches both sparkly AND jazz-hands so they get double love, except that they are too small to actually fit a credit card.

I remember having it in Tokyo when I was there shooting a special edition of Interview with Karl Lagerfeld. – must have been 2005. That’s why I love Chanel bags, because they never date. The silver box clutch is Calvin. Sometimes something hard and metallic is necessary to balance out all the bows…

My alterations lady is a genius and also has a passion for vintage (she does restorations for the V&A museum in London) and suggested that we left the top of the dress unlined, which I’m really glad we did. I’m really into Victoriana and Edwardian pieces at the moment - but worn in an un-costumey way. These boots are perfect with a skinny jean and my jet fringed Victorian mourning cape – sort of rock and roll meets The Piano. I like clothes that tell a story, even if its only a story in my head. One of Merriam Webster’s definitions of Romantic is 'having no basis in fact'.

<span class='fancyPhotoDesc'>Oh this is my new baby. New to ME, anyway. It’s vastly vintage – from the 60's and rather well-loved, which I really like. Somebody wrote on Twitter yesterday that Reality TV stars have ruined the Birkin bag and linked them to Von Dutch trucker hats. Don’t get me wrong, if somebody handed me a Birkin I wouldn’t say no, but I do think that they can sometimes look rather gauche worn in a certain way. You don’t need intelligence or taste to own one. I always liken a woman’s handbag to a man’s car – I like to think that this would be a little vintage two-seater Mercedes convertible. I’d always pick a vintage Mercedes over a bumble-bee yellow Testarossa, wouldn’t you?

The shoes are Valentino. The studs help to balance out all the girly whatnot's. And this shape is SO flattering on the ankle.

<span class='fancyPhotoDesc'>Oh, it’s pretty, isn’t it? Céline . I have biker jackets in black, brown, white leather, tweed, nude silk…shall I continue? They toughen up a girly frock, and the shape suits my frame because it doesn’t add any volume or extraneous detail to my upper half. Just looking at this jacket makes me excited for fall. Doesn’t it look great with the lock on my front door? Andy - my contractor - insisted we get new hardware for the door and did the wallpaper. (There’s nothing better than a gay contractor.
